Almost every man has to deal with it at some point in his life. It is the most common problem on men's scalp. We are, of course, talking about dandruff. Very embarrassing for many men. Especially when you wear dark clothes. Although it doesn't seem very appetizing, it's quite harmless.
A big misunderstanding about a flaky scalp is that it has to do with hygiene. The fact that someone suffers from dandruff basically says nothing about the hygiene of the hair or scalp. That it looks unappetizing is another thing. Fortunately, dandruff is one of the easiest conditions to treat and prevent. Let's start with where and how it originates.
What is Dandruff?
Dandruff is another word for dead skin cells. Now this doesn't sound very appetizing. It is a very natural process, our skin renews itself time and time again.
From the bottom of the skin, dead skin cells are replaced by new healthy skin cells. This process takes about 2 to 3 weeks, but in people with dandruff, this process is faster, causing excessive production of skin flakes. We call this dandruff.
How do scalp flakes arise?
The cause of the acceleration of this process can vary. It can be genetically determined, but also related to eczema-like complaints.
Seborrheic dermatitis is caused by a yeast that is naturally present in the skin. You can recognize this form of eczema by flakes on the eyebrows, for example. Stress can also influence this process, just like the weather, for example due to differences in heat, cold, dryness and moisture.
Scalp on the scalp does not immediately mean that you have dandruff
Sometimes it looks like you have dandruff because you have flakes. This is not always immediately dandruff or excessive production of new skin cells. It is also possible that too much styling products are used, leaving a residue in the hair, which in turn causes flakes. Not rinsing the shampoo properly can also cause itching and flakes.
What can you do against dandruff?
Using anti-dandruff products is of course step one. Please note that it is a product without (or with a minimum amount of) silicone. An anti-dandruff shampoo or a soothing shampoo is recommended. This will not only reduce dandruff but also soothe the scalp.
Washing your hair every day is also not good. Too much stimulation of the scalp can actually cause more irritation and itching, which in turn causes more flakes. If you want to freshen up your hair, you can also use dry shampoo . In addition, we do not recommend drying or styling your hair with a hair dryer . Heat dries out, which makes the flakes worse again. It is also advisable to rinse the hair well with lukewarm water after washing, so that all styling and shampoo residues are rinsed out of the hair.
Is your scalp calm and the flaky scalp under control? Then do not continue to use the anti-dandruff shampoo daily. Switch to a shampoo that cares for the hair and scalp and possibly use the anti-dandruff shampoo once a week to keep the scalp calm. This is to prevent any recurrence of dandruff on your scalp. Well-groomed skin is well hydrated and will therefore be dry and itchy less quickly and therefore remain dandruff-free.
Is dandruff dangerous?
As a rule, dandruff is a fairly harmless condition that you can quickly get rid of. In exceptional cases, it is useful to contact your doctor. Stop by when you:
- You have an inflamed and very sensitive scalp due to scratching
- In addition to dandruff, you also suffer from hair loss
- You also start to get flakes in other places on your body
- Still no improvement after treatment
But again, in many cases, don't panic! Matter of a well-functioning anti-dandruff shampoo and you're done.
