We've all had greasy hair at some point. In most men it is due to not washing the hair for too long. It can only happen that it is caused by something completely different. Do you suffer from greasy hair yourself? Then read on, we give you the best tips for what you can do against oily hair.
Causes oily hair
Our skin always produces oils all over the body through our sebaceous glands, including on the scalp. So we always get oil in our hair. These are also necessary to keep our hair healthy. It also protects the skin. You get oily hair when too much oil accumulates. Then your hair will feel greasy and look dirty. This 'accumulation' can have various causes.
Washing the hair too often
It's a logical response. When you suffer from greasy hair, you automatically wash more often because you want to get rid of the greasy hair. Washing the hair too often will only wash away all the natural oils. This causes the sebaceous glands to produce even more oil to compensate for the oil washed away. This results in oily skin and hair.
Touching your hair all day long
We all want our hair to look good. Every time we run our hands through our hair, body oil from our hands enters the hair. So if you sit with your hands through your hair all day, it will become a greasy mess.
Using the comb or brush too often
Combing and brushing the hair stimulates oil production.
stress
It has been proven that stress plays a role in sebum secretion. This can therefore cause an excess of oil.
Genes
Some men naturally have a higher sebaceous gland production. Also called oily skin. Do your parents or other relatives have oily skin? Then there is a good chance that you too have this of your own.
Using wrong products
Do you always use a wax , oil-based pomade or a heavy conditioner ? These products quickly cause the accumulation of too many oils. This happens quickly, especially if you already have a fairly oily skin.
Thin hair
If you don't have such thick hair, you will be more likely to suffer from oily hair. With thin hair there is less surface area to absorb the oil, so an excess of fats quickly arises.
What can you do against greasy hair
Fortunately, there is almost always something to do about oily hair. If you don't know exactly what the cause is, you can test different things and see if anything changes. Read our tips below.
Wash two to three times a week
Always washing your hair with shampoo is not necessary when you wash yourself. If you use an oil-based pomade, it is of course a different story. Wash your hair with shampoo two to three times a week and use only warm water for the rest of the week.
Use a different shampoo
Try a dry shampoo or shampoo based on menthol or tea tree. Menthol and tea tree provide a good oil balance on the scalp and know how to rid the hair of dirt.
An alternative you could try is lemon juice. Lemon juice has a degreasing effect and can therefore also prevent greasy hair. Mix the juice of one lemon with 100 ml of water and rinse it through your hair.
Avoid products with added oils
For example, many hair and scalp products contain argan oil . Always check the ingredients for oils and try to avoid conditioners and shampoos with such ingredients.
Let the conditioner sit for a while
Leaving the conditioner on for a while can sometimes work wonders and could just be the solution to your problem. A conditioner softens and moisturizes the hair. With oily hair you could speak of an excess of hydration.
Eat healthier
When you eat a lot of food with a high fat content, you will also see this reflected in your skin and therefore also your hair. So make sure you don't eat too many fatty things and try to get enough fruit and vegetables. With enough vitamins and minerals, your skin is better able to keep moisture production in balance.
