What does a moisturizer do?

Wat doet een vochtinbrengende crème?

A moisturizer is the literal translation of a moisturizer , a word that we often come across when it comes to taking care of your face. But what exactly is a moisturizer and how do you choose the right moisturizer in the skincare jungle? Put on your expedition outfit, because we're going to dive into that jungle today.

What is a moisturizer and what does it do?

It's not a party to have tight, itchy, red skin. You also don't exactly cheer up a skin with acne, impurities or a greasy shine. Fortunately, you don't have to accept your fate for what it is, because a moisturizer can help you well in these areas. A moisturizing cream ensures that your skin is well hydrated and this is just necessary for having healthy skin. When your skin is well hydrated, it will be better protected against external influences. The better your skin can retain moisture, the less you will suffer from all the irritations that a skin can cause.

A moisturizer comes in many different shapes, sizes and textures. It can be a day cream , night cream or serum . It is mainly about the function: moisturizing. And a lot too! Your skin will immediately indicate whether you have the right moisturizer. Your skin will then look healthier, younger, fuller and brighter. This is what we call the “moisturizing cream effect.” You have to be sure that you choose a moisturizer that suits your skin type, otherwise it is not a match made in heaven. Therefore, first checkwhich skin type you have.

Moisturizer for dry skin

Your skin can pull, flake, turn red and you can even suffer from eczema. Your dry skin is crying out for one thing: hydration! A moisturizing cream can therefore also be the solution for all your skin problems. Always look for a nice oily moisturizer that can penetrate deep into your skin. The magic words? Shea butter, coconut oil, jojoba oil, etc. Hyaluronic acid and glycerin are also ingredients to filter on, because these are real moisturisers.

Moisturizer for oily skin

You probably know it. Shiny, oily skin after a few hours and you are always easily susceptible to impurities. Not exactly fun either. And now we often hear it "but my skin is already too oily, then I won't moisturize it, will I?" Wrong! Oily skin is even the result of an oily skin type combined with a dehydrated skin condition. That is why it is at least as important to moisturize oily skin correctly. In addition to oily moisturizers, you also have water-based moisturizers that have been specially developed for oily skin. So never choose the oily moisturizers, but your moisturizer may contain fats. For example, take a look at linoleic acid, an oil that has proven itself many times for oily skin.

Moisturizer for sensitive skin

With a sensitive skin type, your skin will immediately indicate whether or not it appreciates something. Your skin quickly reacts to fabrics and can then irritate. Your skin does not go well on some essential oils, such as citrus or cinnamon. Fortunately, moisturizers have been developed especially for this skin type! So hydrate: yes. Perfume, dyes, etc.: no. Opt for a natural moisturizer instead. For this skin type, for example, niacinamide, panthenol, vitamin C, vitamin E and allantoin are active substances that work well. Always make sure you choose a moisturizer for sensitive skin.

Moisturizer for combination or normal skin

May we congratulate you on the fact that your skin has few problems? Good, because this is the skin type that is the nicest to have! However, your skin can also (slightly) dry out, which is why a moisturizer is always a nice boost.

When you have a mixed skin type, different parts of your face react differently than other parts. For example, your T zone (your nose and forehead) may react differently than your cheeks and chin to different creams. So you can choose two different moisturizers and use them on different areas. You can also opt for one moisturizer for your entire face, then pay attention to ingredients such as calendula, chamomile, witch hazel, lemon balm, etc. These ingredients have an antibacterial, clarifying, pore-refining effect and will regulate your sebum production.

What is the best moisturizer for men?

The best moisturizer therefore depends entirely on your skin type. We do not recommend (to put it mildly) using a moisturizer for dry skin if you have oily skin yourself. Always check your own preferences. You have vegan moisturizers, natural moisturizers, etc. Read the description carefully and check the ingredients list!
