The History of Uppercut Deluxe

The brand was built through the creative minds, passion and hard work of Lucas Newman and Steve Purcell, childhood friends with a love for barbering, surfing and skating. Newman discovered the world of barbering while staying in Portland Oregon. Around the corner from where Luke lived was an old-fashion barbershop located next to a café where he had his daily coffee. Every day he looked into the barber shop and admired how barbering was such a timeless profession. He knew it would be a job he could do forever. He came back to Australia, looked for an internship and the rest is history.

Purcell has been working as a barber for 13 years now. He initially started because he hated school and his father told him he had to learn a trade before he could get shelter. Steve's brother got a trim and the barber happened to be advertising an apprentice. Purcell jumped at the chance to close the textbooks and enter the world of barbering. Wanting to work in an environment that reflected who they were, and create a welcoming place for the boys to come and just hang out, they took the plunge... the boys opened their own shop.

At this point, barbering had fallen on the back burner in Australia and was often misunderstood. Luke and Steve were true to their calling, learned their craft well, and brought masculinity back to the barber chair. Today Steve enjoys with a smile and with his old mates who now wait in long queues to take a seat on his barber chair.

Uppercut Deluxe Pomade was born out of the frustration of using mediocre products that didn't fit the vibe of their store; products aimed at the man's wife rather than the man himself. This encouraged the boys to create something they could be proud of. She experimented with different formulas with their chemists, more than a year passed before they were happy with their first product; the "Deluxe Pomade".
